Kōkiri!

We follow in the footsteps of those that have paved the way before us. Those that have mentored us, encouraged us, grown us to continue to add value and create impact through our pakihi (business) Puna Awarau.

Puna Awarau is founded by Kahurangi Malcolm and Frae Cairns, two wāhine Māori who hail from the iwi and hapū of Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua, Te Rarawa, Te Waiariki, Ngāti Tūtae, Ngāi Tuupoto, Ngāti Reinga, Te Hikutu, Te Aupouri and Ngāti Kahu.

  • We are 100% Māori owned

  • We are 100% wāhine owned

We have advocated for the power of business ownership and the possibilities of mana motuhake and rangatiratanga through business. Now we get to live it while doing what we love - it's a no-brainer.

We developed the business while on maternity leave with own pēpi, those that know us won't find that surprising at all, as we are suckers for hard work and deeply passionate about equity, systemic change and impact.

What we do

Puna Awarau is a Māori consultancy firm working at the forefront of Indigenous procurement in Aotearoa. With unrivalled expertise in supplier diversity we are your specialist support. Generating Māori (and Pasifika) socio-economic outcomes within organisations and major projects.

We work with government agencies, local body authorities, Iwi, Māori land trusts, private enterprises and charitable trusts that want to better understand what social value they can create through their spending.

We understand the power of procurement in creating change and believe a more equitable Aotearoa is possible. We offer independent expert advice and support to organisations working towards broader outcomes through social procurement, progressive procurement and/or supplier diversity.

Directors Frae Cairns and Kahurangi Malcolm bring together sustainable procurement expertise and Māori economic development experience to create a niche consultancy.

Combined, this skill set fills an urgent gap in the market to support organisations to make a difference through something they do everyday - spend money.

Our name

Ko te wai te oranga o nga mea katoa, water is the life-giver of all things. It has mauri, a vitality, an energy that has the power to give life. Water is also about connection, flowing between people and place. This is the inspiration behind the name Puna Awarau.

  • Puna, a spring of water

  • Awa, a river or stream

  • Rau, many

Metaphorically, it signals ‘streams’ of wellbeing and prosperity that can flow to many. Puna Awarau represents the intent of Supplier Diversity, and its ability to feed into many streams with a flow on effect that continues to nourish its surrounding environment like lifeblood.

E mihi ana kia Te Mete Lowman, i waihanga i te kupu nei hei whakamana i nga hua o ngā mahi rironga pāpori.
